For those with a taste for history and culture, “Wainwright described the square mile between Tilberthwaite and Langdale as “one of the loveliest in Lakeland”. In the 1800’s it was home to Lanty Slee, a notorious bootlegger, famed for his ingenuity, audacity, and ability to outwit the authorities. And ran a number of illicit stills throughout Little Langdale where he produced his illegal brews. The Three Shires Inn dates back to 1829 and would have been Lanty’s local and probably one of his best liquor customers.
The surrounding area offers an abundance of interest, from the Viking-era Ting Mound at Wrynose Pass to the dramatic Cathedral Quarry Cave, where scenes from Snow White and the Huntsman were filmed and the Iconic Slaters Bridge. After a day of exploring, unwind at the Three Shires Inn, a charming country pub offering refined meals and exceptional local ales.
Lanty’s legacy has been resurrected and the Three Shires Inn is now run by the Lanty Slee liquor company. Wetherlam View guests enjoy a 20% discount on food and drink at the Three Shires.
